In Plain Terms
A Product Information Management (PIM) system is a central source of truth for product data — descriptions, attributes, images, pricing rules — that then feeds that data out to every channel that needs it: the main storefront, marketplaces, mobile apps, even print catalogs.
Why It Matters Once a Catalog Grows
Without a PIM, product data usually lives inconsistently across the ecommerce platform's own database, spreadsheets, and whatever a marketplace integration expects — which is how the same product ends up with three different descriptions in three places. A PIM (commonly Akeneo in the Magento/Adobe Commerce ecosystem) enforces one structured record per product and pushes it everywhere else.
Where the Real Integration Work Is
The hard part isn't installing a PIM — it's mapping attributes correctly between the PIM and the storefront platform, keeping large catalogs in sync without breaking cache, and handling channel-specific formatting (a marketplace often wants a different attribute set than the main site). This is the kind of integration depth covered under Ecommerce Platforms.
